Solar Emergency Power

A customer came into Illinois Battery in Chicago to get their car battery replaced. They had relatives in Puerto Rico who will be without power until March 2018, and they were using battery powered fans and lights to survive the harsh, hot conditions and dark nights without lights. Someone actually stole their generator, even though there's not much gas to run it.

They wanted some batteries to send over there, but we told them there is no way to recharge them because the electric grid is down.

I came up with a solar charging system for a 12 volt battery that can run a fan and some lights, You can see the lights on the far right, brightly illuminating the windshield wiper display and our picture of DA BEARS! The fan in the center of the picture is run from an inverter connected to the battery, but it would be more efficient to get one that runs on 12 volts DC. The solar panels are shown in the lower left of the picture and absorb light shining through the window and from the ceiling lights to generate electricity that charges the battery.

I offered to donate the system to them, but they haven't come back since they were here. We also plan to make more of these in the future for use in disaster areas like Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico (next time the big storms come around).
